“Sometimes through adversity you find uniqueness- it’s not always money that will help you. Having the ability to find a way forward is key to being successful.” – Deborah Mitchell

I told you of Deborah Mitchell’s story in an earlier book (Find Your Dream Job), but that was merely the story of how she changed careers and found the job of her dreams. What it didn’t tell was the story of her subsequent success as the director of her own company. Deborah epitomizes a positive mindset and fully believes that through an optimistic outlook you can achieve whatever success you desire.  She is living proof.

Deborah has built a multimillion-dollar beauty product empire. She has won several prestigious awards, which have helped raise her profile in the UK and internationally. Indeed, her Heaven Bee Venom Mask, a “natural alternative to botox,” won a Gold Stevie Women in Business Award for best product. Heaven has taken the market by storm and enjoyed record growth of almost 300 percent in the past year.

Magical Thinking

It all started as a kind of magical thinking. Deborah was an ordinary girl from Wolverhampton. She was meant to be taking a class in beauty therapy, but instead she was staring out the window. She wasn’t daydreaming, she was concentrating on a vision she had of running her own business and beauty salons.

Deborah went on to pursue that vision. While still training as a beauty therapist, she started looking for work before the other students to get ahead of the game. Deborah sought to give herself the best possible chance to get a job in the competitive beauty field. She was immediately hired at a local salon where she gained the experience needed to set her dream in motion.

After three years she moved to a salon in Wolverhampton where she gained more experience, eventually leaving to purse her plan of setting up a mobile beauty business.

From the outset, Deborah looked for ways to expand her business and accumulate skills and experience. By investing in a box of nail extensions, she learned to do nails, which helped her save money towards starting her own beauty product line.

While this all sounds easy in hindsight, Deborah experienced many hurdles. After leaving her first husband, she did not wallow and give up, instead opening her first shop in Shropshire that same week.

“I would set up in a health club, but I had so many clients that I couldn’t handle them all myself”. Over time she built up a team of beauticians to cope with the demand. Deborah’s reputation continued to grow by word-of-mouth and she opened a second shop, this time in central London.

A high street chain wanted to manufacture Deborah’s products in their factories, but Deborah’s commitment to making pure, natural products , Deborah opted to remain independent. She went on to take a huge financial risk by buying her own factory and gathered major debt in the process. Deborah’s knew that she had to ensure that the production of her beauty treatments are genuinely organics and preservative free. She is driven by a desire to spread a healing of the skin, and not to just sell out and jeopardize the quality of the product.

“The way I do business is always the same. It never changes. I never go after the money, I go looking for people. I make sure the products fir the person in the right way. I don’t need to do it any other way. That is my life. That is my passion.”

In the past Deborah worried about cash flow and how to pay staff wages, but she is not worrying anymore.

“I’ve just signed a $167 million contract with China and we’re also selling in Japan and with Heaven Skincare USA. Money’s not a problem anymore. My life’s great, actually, whether I go up or down from this, I’m still doing what I want to do at the end of the day.”

The Wheel Gets bigger

“I’m still not really driven by money but I do have to make people’s wages. So in fact as my business grows the wheel gets bigger and there’s more to earn. I think that you get what you ask for- you just have to ask intelligently. You can’t doubt whatever it is you want, but you have to work out what you want and how you are going to get there.”

Deborah has many distributors, including Heaven USA that help build her business on her behalf all over the world. It helps, of course, that she is now the beauty therapist of choice for many A-list celebrities and members of the Royal Family. Deborah loves people and people love her.

“I don’t have to do Google ads. People just talk about the treatments because they like them and like the products. The clientele that I’ve got is all different kinds of people. When you have a client list they talk to one another and to their friends and in the royal echelons they talk to everybody. That group just happens to be lords and ladies, Cheryl Cole and Sylvester Stallone! That was has happened for me. My clients are proud of my products and the results and talk about it. Everyone has told me that they like the fact that my products are all organic.”

Major events including the opening of a flagship store in Taiwan that is a part of a bigger distribution deal in the Far East, followed by a more recent contact in which Heaven products will be sold in over 2,500 salons in China. As a result of these deals, Deborah has attained hundreds of British therapists to work in the new Chinese stores. Her success is extraordinary.

“I can’t cope with the demand for everything I’ve got now. But we’ve got to set rules about how I work and what I want to do. I will always treat clients myself. It’s something that is really important to me. I did treatments all day yesterday without a break. I’ll be working through until 7:30 tonight with no break. I’m booked for up to a year in advance, I would be booked up solid forever if we opened bookings beyond the year!”

Deborah’s story is a great one, and truly inspiring to anyone hoping to set up a lucrative dream business.

The Mindset

What’s her secret? She would say it is a matter of self-belief. “I do believe that if I turn my hand to anything, I can be successful at it. It’s not just my knowledge and my experience. I know that if I choose to do something, it will happen and more importantly that it will work. You make a choice- and a decision. You say, ‘I do want to so this, and I do really want to earn money from it.’ People have to make that statement.”

But, for me, Deborah’s additional secret in her authenticity and her integrity. She is totally committed to organic products and has refused to sell out her dream along the way. Furthermore, she is generous, has amazing connections with people and works extremely hard.

Deborah admits to being competitive. She describes herself as a leader but sees herself as more of a collective leader. “I want my family and team along the ride with mer. I need to have lots of people around to experience this success with.” She is the sole director of her company and doesn’t want to share that role because she wants to keep the integrity of her company and products.

Deborah’s Attitude on Social Networking

“Social networking is great. The key is the word ‘social’, I do it to be social with friends but it’s a great tool to promote and sell the products and drive them to the website and salons. I like to reach out to clients and thank them for buying my products. I get a lot of business from it because I choose to engage a lot with users.”

Deborah’s Biggest Challenges

Copying by rival manufacturers has been a big problem. When Deborah’s formulas were stolen at one point, she thought she was ruined. Her response, however, was to start fresh and develop new and improved products that were far superior and became best-sellers. Copycat products are just a part of the challenge of running a successful business. “I try to think there are no setbacks in life, just learning experiences.”

Deborah also says that juggling her family is also among her biggest challenges. “You do have to make your commitment to your work and almost book and appointment with relatives to see them, and that is hard.”

Deborah’s Biggest Success

“One of my biggest successes is being awarded a fellowship from the college where I used to be called ‘Debbie Dumb Blonde.’ That felt good.”

The Key to Deborah’s Success

“Actually I don’t think I’m successful- yet. But meeting people’s requirements is my business and it will be successful because I will continue to create the highest quality products and services.”

Deborah’s Success

  1. Focus on what you want to achieve. Ask yourself what you’re prepared to sacrifice and how much effort you’re prepared to put in. Write it down.
  2. When you have your list of what you want, find people to help you achieve each individual thing.
  3. If you don’t have a particular skill set, ask for help and develop one.
  4. Sometimes you need to choose people to work with on gut instinct. Two years ago a Chinese and Taiwanese company were vying for the distribution rights to my products and wanted to give me the money upfront. I turned them down because it didn’t feel right to me. I went with a tiny Chinese distributor that I trusted and believed in. I know have a $16 million deal with them. They’re aiming to open 2,500 stores in China alone. In Japan, the store in Toyko has attracted the Chelsea Flower Show 2012 gold medal winner Ishihara Kazuyuki to design a large garden in it.
  5. I’m invited to a lot of events but I cannot go to every one of them. I work out which ones are the best to go to based on the marketability and what will work for the brand. Everyone wants a piece of Heaven.
